Haverhill Rovers 1 Tiptree United 1

Hamlet Croft, Haverhill, Suffolk

Haverhill is a fairly unremarkable market town in the south-western corner of Suffolk. It has a few buildings of historical interest including a grade two listed Arts Centre (whose theatre has been frequented on a number of occasions by the angel of domestic bliss and I). It boasts the world’s first laser lit roundabout the centre piece of which – the Spirit of Enterprise sculpture – leans over as if hit by an errant truck heading into the western side of town along the A1307. My route today though bought me into Haverhill from the east – along the Stour Valley – and the highly picturesque villages of Cavendish, Clare and Stoke-by-Clare, making for a most enjoyable drive.

               

Hamlet Croft, home of Haverhill Rovers, which sits just to the east of the town centre, is a pleasant surprise. Cut into the side of a gently sloping chalk hill, the ground is surrounded by trees, and it’s one and only stand, in a raised position along the southern touchline, offers a great vantage point from which to watch a game. Either side of the stand are an assortment of buildings that house a tea and burger bar and club house, and while these could all benefit from a few repairs and a lick of paint, the overall effect is comfortable and friendly and what watching football at this level is all about.

I should point out here that plans are afoot to move the club to a new £1.7M community stadium although this is still very much in the planning stage and not as imminent as the rather optimistic “September 2008” carried by the entry for Rovers in Wikipedia. Also here mention should be made of the fine brick dugouts that sit below the stand and were featured in DugoutsDavid Bauckham’s excellent publication of 2006.

Rovers joined the Eastern Counties League (currently the Ridgeons League) in 1964, and 15 years later clinched their one and only league title. Their best effort in the FA Cup came in 1966-67 season when they reached the 3rd Qualifying Round, and in the FA Vase the quarter-finals were reached in the 1986-87 campaign. The clubs all-red strip is currently augmented with yellow tracksuit tops that sport the Watford FC crest (a donation by the Championship side perhaps), while the clubs own badge is simply a football, with the clubs initials H R F C in each corner, over it’s year of formation, 1886.
